Digital Etiquette for Kids
A Parent's Guide to Online Manners

Dear Techie
Remember when "playing nicely" meant sharing toys and using kind words on the playground? Today, that playground has expanded into the vast, sometimes wild world of digital communication. Our kids are growing up with smartphones and tablets as naturally as we grew up with board games and bicycles.
But here's the thing: just because our children are tech-savvy doesn't mean they automatically know how to be kind, respectful digital citizens.
What Exactly is Digital Etiquette?
Think of digital etiquette (or "netiquette") as the modern-day version of "please" and "thank you" – but for online interactions. It's about treating people with respect, whether you're messaging a classmate, commenting on a video, or participating in an online classroom.
Just like we teach kids to say "excuse me" in real life, we now need to teach them how to communicate thoughtfully in digital spaces.
Why Does Digital Manners Matter So Much?
Unlike a passing comment in the hallway, digital messages can:
Stick around forever
Be screenshot and shared
Misinterpreted without tone or body language
One harsh comment can hurt someone's feelings much more deeply online than in person. By teaching digital etiquette, we're not just preventing hurt feelings – we're helping our kids build:
Stronger relationships
Better communication skills
Future professional success
Online safety
Spotting the Difference: Respectful vs. Disrespectful Online Behaviour
What Respect Looks Like Online:
Thinking before posting
Offering kind, constructive feedback
Protecting others' privacy
Showing empathy
Red Flags of Disrespectful Behaviour:
Sending repeated hurtful messages
Intentionally provoking others
Excluding peers from online groups
Spreading unverified rumours
Practical Tips for Digital Kindness
For Kids:
Pause before you post
Use "please" and "thank you"
Ask before sharing someone's photo
Keep things positive
Use clear punctuation and emojis to show tone
For Parents:
Model good online behaviour
Stay informed about digital platforms
Set clear guidelines
Create a safe space for honest conversations
The Bottom Line
Digital etiquette isn't about restricting freedom – it's about empowering our kids to be confident, kind communicators in an increasingly connected world.
Our children are growing up in a digital landscape we didn't experience. By guiding them with understanding, patience, and clear expectations, we can help them navigate this world with compassion, respect, and skill.
Remember: Every kind message, every moment of digital empathy is a small step towards building a more positive online community.
